Style Expressions : THINK AHEAD
by MONICA ROLLING cdeca,csp,pcc

I believe in stylish rooms that will grow with your child and set a pattern for life.

When decorating children’s bedrooms whether babies or teenagers many factors are to be consider such as practicalities and safety. Providing the right environment for learning and development is very important.

Children need their own space to grow and develop their own personalities. Allocating areas for different activities in a children’s room teaches them to differentiate between quite time, playing time and studying.

A comfy armed chair positioned in a corner provided with a floor lamp, table, ottoman and throw will provide a quite special place for reading with a parent or on their own. A craft table and chairs for building and creative activities, a small desk, with proper illumination is worth working into their room.

Add a low bookcase or shelving unit (bolt it to the wall for safety) where children can put away their books and toys; place larger toys on the lower shelves for easy access. Different size baskets are a good option to put on shelves for storage. Also a blackboard will encourage writing and drawing. A well organize room will encourage children to keep everything in its place.

Steer clear of branded TV shows, or “movie character” furniture and accessories. Instead make your own brand and most important of all, involve your child with the decorating of their own room. This will give them a sense of pride to keep things in order. Wall decals prove kids rooms can be fun minus the branding!

Since an early age colour can affect our moods, choosing soft, warm, soothing and relaxing colours for babies and young children will provide them with comfort, and harmony in their bedrooms. As they grow older you can provide colour and a different look with accessories, rugs, drapes, bed covers, or blinds.

Hard-surface flooring is a healthier option for children’s bedrooms as carpets trap allergies like dust and mould. There are many eco-friendly options in the market like bamboo, cork, and YES, linoleum (made from linseed oil). You can soften thing up with a washable cotton rug.

Safety is also very important to consider such as using cordless blinds which you can also get with a room-darkening backing.

So get designing! Think ahead, think green, do research and most of all have fun! Sweet dreams!
