Boot Camp Ontario: Keeping active on the go!
by Katherine Hamilton

Being a mom myself, I know how difficult it can be to commit to keeping active and healthy, especially if you have little ones. So I’ve put together a list of things you can do to keep moving throughout your day, without taking any real “extra” time out of your regular schedule to do it! You will be surprised how easy it can be. Here are a few things you can do even with the little one(s) at home with you....just think how many extra calories you can burn so simply!

  1. Whenever you are counting, reciting the alphabet, or singing to your little one in the high chair, do some wide and narrow legged squats to the tune! They think it’s pretty funny! Jumping jacks work well too!
  2. Do walking lunges instead of just walking when going from one room to another. (Your knee should never extend beyond a 90 deg angle).
  3. If you are busy in the kitchen, take a couple cans of food and work your biceps, shoulders and waistline by doing simple bicep curls, shoulder press and then drop side to side bringing your arm to your knee (from the side) to work the waist – back and forth like a pendulum.
  4. Waiting for a bottle to warm up in the microwave for 1 min? Take that minute to hold a squat against a wall (start with 30 sec and continue to work your way up to 1 min)
  5. Sitting down burping the baby, or checking emails can be a great time to sit nice and erect and squeeze & release those gluts for 3 sets of 20!
  6. Taking your little one out in the stroller? Get on those running shoes and push yourself to do a brisk walk (or 30 sec run if you have a running stroller) every couple of minutes –you can also purchase ankle weights or a walking “toning” running shoe.
  7. While your little one is having carpet time, get on the carpet with them and hold yourself in the plank position for 1 min to work your core! Start with 30 sec and work your way up to 1 and even 2 minutes! (Remember to keep that bum down and make sure your spine is as straight as possible while you hold this pose).
  8. Drink a large glass of water as soon as you wake up, and before every snack or meal throughout the day.
We hope these quick and easy tips keep your little ones smiling and you moving! Have fun, and “BE CREATIVE”!

There's only one sure way to meet those fitness goals and become a success story...you have to stick with it!
